A few days ago, Demi Lovato posted an inspirational message on her Instagram account on the subject of drug abuse and addiction. Her message went along with a video from a non-profit organization called Facing Addiction.

She wrote, “I am one of the 1 in 7 people who has faced addiction, and I am grateful to be in recovery today. It’s time for us all to reflect, and start facing addiction. Let’s stop ignoring the biggest problem in our country we often don’t want to look at.”

Lovato’s History with Addiction

It might come as a surprise to many, but Demi Lovato is only 23-years old. It’s just that she popped up on our TV screens at an early age. Her career has been in TV shows such as Sonny with a Chance; movies such as the Disney Film Camp Rock; in the fashion industry as a model; a judge and mentor on The X Factor show (American edition); and currently as an award-winning Pop and R&B artist.

Unfortunately, Lovato has had to come face-to-face with an enemy that has become an epidemic in America: drug addiction. After an intervention in 2010 when she was only 18-years old, she went to a rehab facility. She had been taking drugs and alcohol; suffering from depression; and she was also bulimic. The treatment center also diagnosed her with bipolar disorder – which is a mental health problem characterized by mood swings and depression.

In 2013, she told Access Hollywood that she “could not go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine….” She added that even when she had a sober companion, she still found a way to hide and use her drugs. She said, “I’m very, very good at manipulating people and that was something that I did in my disease. I would manipulate everyone around me. There were times I would just continue to lie, so that everything looked OK on the outside.”

Thankfully, Lovato is currently 3-years sober. In March, this year, she posted a message on Instagram thanking her partner Wilmer Valderrama for supporting her through her struggle with addiction and recovery.

She also spoke to People Magazine in May and said, “I’m living well with my mental illness – I am actually functioning like a very happy person would. I couldn’t be happier today. I’m living my dream….. Life is pretty amazing.”

Facing Addiction Inc.

Lovato has partnered with the organization Facing Addiction to spread awareness of the drug abuse epidemic. According to their website, the organization seeks to find solutions to the drug crisis. It does so by:

  • Pooling together people who have been touched by addiction
  • Supporting innovative tools to combat addiction
  • Pushing the government to implement policies and laws that will help fight addiction.

Final Message

The partnership between Lovato and Facing Addiction will help to raise awareness to the addiction issue. Everyone must know that addiction is a disease and not a choice. But whoever is affected can get on the path to recovery.

As Lovato said in her Instagram post, “We all are connected to this issue one way or another and we all need to be part of the solution. Together we can replace shame with support, hope, and healing.”
