You may be familiar with meth only from the hit TV show Breaking Bad. Or you, or someone close to you, may have had personal experiences with it. Sometimes it helps to know that celebrities and famous figures have been through dark times – including meth use – to know that drugs do not discriminate – and neither does recovery.

Adolf Hitler

During World War II, “Pervitin” – which were methamphetamine tablets – were given to German troops to create “super soldier machines.” These tablets would reduce fatigue and empathy, while increasing aggression. In 1942, Hitler himself began receiving daily methamphetamine injections.

Marilyn Monroe

Iconic Marilyn Monroe received treatment from celebrity doctor Max “Dr. Feelgood” Jacobson. He had a “magic elixir” for his star patients. Monroe met Jacobson through a mutual friend, Truman Capote. The famous “Happy Birthday” song Marilyn sang to JFK was allegedly performed after taking Jacobson’s meth concoction.

John F. Kennedy

JFK’s secret service gave Dr. Max Jacobson the nickname of “Dr. Feelgood.” This celebrity doctor provided JFK with never-ending shots of “formula,” which were full of methamphetamines. JFK claimed the shots helped cure him of his migraines, chronic back pain, and lack of stamina.

Truman Capote

The famous author of In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany’s was known to abuse painkillers, alcohol, and Valium – so it’s really no surprise that methamphetamines also found their way on that list. Capote was yet another one of Jacobson’s celebrity clients, describing those “formula” shots as “instant euphoria” followed by a crash that felt like “falling down a well.”

Andre Agassi

A famous tennis player, Agassi failed a drug test in 1997, claiming his water bottle had been spiked. Around 10 years later, the athlete admitted to using crystal meth during his tennis career and opens up about it in his 2010 autobiography.

Robert Downey Jr.

A mere three months after being released from state prison, Robert Downey Jr. was arrested for possession of cocaine and meth in 2000. Now sober, the influential actor thanks meditation and martial arts for his sobriety, even stating that the strongest thing he takes is espresso.

Jerry Mayfield

This former NASCAR driver was arrested in 2011 for methamphetamine possession. In past situations, he had tested positively for meth many times. In this 2011 case, police found 40 firearms and upwards of $100,000 worth of stolen goods upon his arrest.

Yasmeen Bleeth

This Baywatch star entered rehab back in 2000 after getting into a car accident while driving under the influence. Upon further investigation, cops uncovered syringes, meth, and other drug paraphernalia in Bleeth’s hotel room.

Rufus Wainwright

After a meth overdose that left him temporarily blind, singer Rufus Wainwright entered rehab around 2003, with the help of music legend Elton John.

Jodie Sweetin

You might remember her from Full House as Stephanie Tanner. Jodie Sweetin didn’t quite know what to do when Full House ended in 1995, and she quickly spiraled out of control when she started using alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy, and meth. She entered rehab in 2004 after an intervention led by her family. She even admitted to walking down the red carpet, high on meth, at the Olsen’s New York Minute movie premier.

Heidi Fleiss

Heidi Fleiss, also known as the “Hollywood Madam,” was charged with possession of meth and other drugs, driving under the influence, and driving without a license. Fleiss admitted to entering Celebrity Rehab for money, trading in prostitution, and using meth regularly.

Tom Sizemore

Actor Tom Sizemore started doing meth with “Hollywood Madam” Heidi Floss. He was arrested back in 2007 for possession while already on probation for a prior drug case. He credits his sobriety and transformation to Celebrity Rehab counselor Bob Forrester – who was also Tom’s former dealer.

This sassy pop princess has a dark past. In 2006, she went to rehab for crystal meth after a dealer threatened her life. A 2012 interview with Oprah brought out how she got sober – Fergie says she went “cold turkey” after praying to God about her paranoid delusions of being followed by the FBI and SWAT team.

Lalaine Vergara Paras

You may remember this starlet from the hit Disney TV show Lizzie McGuire. She pleaded guilty to felony charges in 2007 after getting caught with possession of crystal meth.

Eddie Van Halen

Van Halen entered rehab back in 2007 in order to treat a meth addiction that had spiraled out of control, among other co-existing addictions and issues.

Craig Robinson

A star on the hilarious show The Office, Craig Robinson was arrested for possession of meth, cocaine, and ecstasy in the summer of 2008. Robinson also played a drug dealer’s henchman, receiving rave reviews, on the movie The Pineapple Express – which premiered right before the actor’s scheduled court appearance.

Nicole Bobek

Nicole Bobek was a U.S. figure skater whose skating career ended just before the year 2000. In 2009, a bit after her career change, she was arrested for possession of meth and even was suspected to be a member of a drug ring.
